Ice Dams and Winter Roof Leaks: A Cincinnati Homeowner’s Guide

Before winter arrives, a fall roof check gives Cincinnati homeowners a chance to spot concerns and plan the next step. Start with observations from the ground and inside your home. Leave walking on the roof and close-up inspections to a qualified roofing professional.
Look for leaves collecting in gutters, overflowing sections, and downspouts that are disconnected or blocked. Arrange safe cleaning rather than reaching from an unstable ladder. Notice where runoff lands, too. Water should drain away from the home rather than collect beside the foundation.
From a safe location, look for missing or displaced roofing material and debris on the roof. Take dated photographs of anything new. A ground-level view is useful for documenting concerns, but it cannot confirm the condition of hidden layers or every roof penetration.
Check ceilings and upper walls for new water stains. A musty smell or damp area in an accessible attic also deserves attention. Tell your roofer when the symptom appears: during rain, after wind-driven rain, or as snow melts. That timeline can help guide the inspection.
Chimneys, vents, skylights, and places where a roof meets a wall need careful attention. Ask the contractor to explain any flashing concerns and show photographs. A specific finding is more useful than a general recommendation to “replace everything.”
Ask what needs attention now, what can be monitored, and whether the proposed work is a targeted repair or a larger project. Request a written scope, including the roofing material involved and any conditions that could change the work.
Fall is a useful time to review concerns before winter weather, but an active leak should not wait for a seasonal appointment. If water is entering the home, contact a roofing professional promptly.
